With numerous recreational programs both for adults and young ones, even visitors and tourists will appreciate the sense of community in this side of the Lehigh Valley region.

The entire city has about six hundred acres of public land, within which there are forty parks and a huge golf course. In this article though, we’re going to talk about several recreation centers which are considered as the most visited in the city of Bethlehem.

Earl E. Schaffer Municipal Ice Rink

Located at 345 Illick’s Mill Road, this establishment offers skating lessons for people of all ages, regardless of skills or abilities in ice skating. There are trained and experienced instructors, which mean the lessons are going to be safe and fun. The lesson program is under the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills and is in fact endorsed by USA Hockey. Likewise, the same rink is also used for hockey. Groups and family can rent and organize a hockey game.

Ice House

Another winter recreation center is the Ice House, which is located on Sand Island. This is actually a recreation and performing arts center, or basically multi-purpose facility used by theater groups and different organizations. The place is also available for private rentals. The Ice House is also famous because the Pennsylvania Youth Theater and Mock Turtle Marionette Theater are performing their theater productions here all year long. The presentations are open for the public to see.

Park Pavilions

Bethlehem PA is also home to three parks where pavilions are available for reservation. These are Illick’s Mill, Saucon Park, and South Mountain. The cost for reservations is obviously cheaper during weekdays while weekends and holidays correspond to higher prices.

Dog Park

And of course, the city also has a dog park. This off-leash recreation area for your canine buddies is available to the residents of the city. It is located at 259 Illick’s Mill Road. But just like other dog parks, owners and handlers will be solely responsible for their pets.

Swimming Pools

There are six known public pools in Bethlehem, PA and they’re all available during the summer months. Of the six, the largest is Memorial Pool. The other pools you can explore with your family during the summer are West Side, Stark, Clearview, Saucon, and Yosko.


Moreover, Bethlehem is also offering annual drop-in parks program in eight different neighborhood parks. The events and activities to anticipate are games, field trips, sports, showcase of arts and crafts, and many more. There is also free lunch for daytime sessions.

Park Music

And yes, there is music in the park! In fact, it is a summer concert series that traditionally begins in late May and then ends in September. The concerts are usually held at the Rose Garden and the City Center Plaza. Another venue is the Steelworker’s Memorial.
